Super Star Rajini On "ROBO"

Ayngaran International and Eros Multimedia have officially announced that superstar Rajnikanth, ace director Shankar, and music wizard A. R. Rahman are teaming up once again for their new film 'Robot'.

'Robot' is all set to become grand and entertaining film ever made in Indian cinema. The movie will be simultaneously produced in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and other languages. 'Robot' will have the state-of-the-art technology.

Eros International is an established global player in the fast-growing Indian media and entertainment arena. It has built a successful business model around the release of 30 new films every year and has film library containing more than 1,300 titles, making it one of the largest content owners in the business. Eros has the possession of the distribution rights for films including ‘Devdas’, ‘Om Shanti Om’, ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’, and ‘Partner’.
Eros is now producing and co-producing around 70 films in Hindi with leading artists such as Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.

Ayngaran has been the pioneers in Tamil Film Distribution in theatrical and home video formats in the International Market. The History of Ayngaran business dates back to 1987 when it had the vision to acquire the International Rights across formats of many Tamil films that became blockbusters.

The Ayngaran library has over 1500 films including ‘Sivaji’, "Padayappa’, ‘Chandramukhi’, ‘Mudhalvan’, ‘Indian’, ‘Jeans’, ‘Boys’, ‘Pokkiri’, ‘Gilli’, ‘Sivakasi’, ‘Kaathalukku Mariyadhai’, ‘Alaipayuthey’, ‘Kandukondain Kandukondain’, ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ and ‘Billa 2007’ amongst others.

As far as 'Robot' is concerned, it is like a roller coaster ride for the movie, as Shankar has been contemplating with many names for his dream project. First it was said that Kamal Haasan would act in it. Then Vikram’s name surfaced. Post ‘Sivaji’, we heard that Hrithik Roshan would be the dream hero. Then came the name of Aamir Khan. Finally Shankar made an official announcement that it would be Shahrukh Khan, who would don the role in his most intimate project.

However, it came as a setback to the director when Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan had pulled out from the project. Some leading Tamil magazines speculated that Ajith would be roped in. but finally superstar has agreed to act in the movie and that puts an end to all speculations about the project.

Since the project would cost hundred crore rupees, it goes without saying that it needs a star like Rajini, who has incredible market value, to redeem the money and ensure profit for the investors.

Jeeva on"Siva manasula Sakthi"

There is this song in this movie that goes, 'Naanga MGRum illa, Nambiarum illa, naduvila.' That aptly sums up this Valentine Day fare. With no big stars to boast of, the only way to get the crowds in, is either with a good musical score, attractive lead pair or good old slapstick. Siva Manasula Sakthi (SMS) treads a safe path. It does not take itself seriously, and more importantly, debutant director M Rajesh has chosen to present a comic skit. And it works to some extent in the first half at least. For the rest, he has leaned on old films to give a fillip to what is now standard fare in Tamil cinema. Poor, undereducated city youth chancing upon a smart, well-educated girl, and with amazing self confidence over his eligibility, goes after her, who, surprise, surprise, reciprocates sooner or later.

So you have Siva (Jiiva) chancing upon Sakthi (Anuya) on a train, and striking up a conversation with her. Both are street smart, so while Sakthi, an RJ, claims to be an air hostess, Siva, employed in a courier firm, leads her to believe that he is serving in the army. The unmasking scenes are enjoyable, specially the one where Siva's mother and sister tag along for the first date. Likewise the scenes where Jiiva mimics Kamal Hassan, spoofs Rajnikanth and Major Sundarajan are enjoyable.

Rajesh seems to have spent more time working on laugh lines, instead of paying attention to the story. You can accept that Jiiva is a prankster, but by carrying it too far, especially in the run-up to the wedding, the film fails to work, and Jiiva's acting is a toss up between plain silly and fairly irritating in the second half. It doesn't sound as if Yuvan had a good day in the studios. On the whole, time pass when you have nothing else to do.

Dhanush on "Padikathavan"

Cast: Dhanush, Tamanna, Prathap Pothan, Syaji Shinde, Suman, Atul Kulkarni
Language: Tamil
Banner: Sun Pictures
Director: Suraaj
Producer: P.Venkatrama Reddy, B.Bharathy Reddy
Camera: A.A.Venkatesh
Story: Suraaj
Screenplay: Suraaj
Dialogue: Suraaj
Lyrics: Pa.Vijay, Snehan, Tabushankar
Music: Mani Sharma
Year: 2009

Director Suraaj has tried his hand at time-tested theme. An average-looking youth, who falls in love with a rich and a charming girl. He overcomes a gang of baddies who bay for his blood to eventually hold the hands of his beloved. Suraaj has tried a marriage between action and comedy. However a sense of deja vu prevails as the film progresses.

The director has strictly applied the rules of Tamil film grammar in the first-half as the hero is ridiculed by his father, he spends his time with a set of good-for-nothing friends and cliched sequences leading to romance blossoming between the lead pair. Towards the latter part, the influence of 'mirch masala' Telugu action films cannot be denied.

Radhakrishnan alias Rocky (Dhanush) is the youngest son of an auditor (Prathap Pothen) in Chennai. In the family of intellectuals, Rocky is unique. He has been attempting for several years to pass his matriculation examinations. This invites the wrath of his father.

Inspired by one of his friend's (Suman Shetty) suggestion that he love a well-educated girl and marry her, Rocky begins his search for one. He comes across Gayathri (Tamanna), an aeronautical student. As usual after 'cat and mouse game', Rocky wins over Gayathri's heart. Unfortunately a group of goons from Andhra Pradesh come after her. Gayathri gets rescued by her father Samarasinha Reddy (Suman), a rich and an influential man in Andhra Pradesh. She is forced to go to her native by father.

Meanwhile, Rocky begins his journey in search of his beloved. When he lands in Andhra Pradesh, he is thrown open to many challenges and surprises. He starts to fight unknown enemies. When it looks like he had sorted out all troubles and ready to hold Gayathri's hands, hurdle comes in the form of Kasi (Atul Kulkarni), a dreaded goon from Thirunelveli . How he clears the last hurdle in his journey to wedlock his beloved forms the climax.

It is a 'typical' Dhanush in the film. He plays to his strength. Thanks to his boy-next-door looks, he manages to bring life into the character. Dhanush has managed well to combine both action and humour. His hard toil is visible all through the film.

Tamanna looks fresh and refreshing. Though she plays a cliched heroine in the film, her charming looks does woo the audience. Vivek as 'Assault' Arumugham evokes abundant humour. In the company of 'Cell' Murugan and 'Bonda' Mani, he is at his best bringing the roof down with laughter. Interestingly, Vivek does a Vadivelu this time around.
He seems to have been part of a comedy track that Vadivelu had often played in his earlier movies.

Suman as Tamanna's dad fits the role well, while the likes of Shayaji Shinde and Atul Kulkarni speak from their belly. Of course a host of stunt artistes wielding sickles and guns do form part of the movie.

Mani Sharma's has come up with a racy music thanks to his chart busters in recent Telugu films. Produced by Vijaya Productions and presented by Sun Pictures, Padikkathavan reminds us of films like Winner and Run. It would be a treat for those who love some hardcore action combined with fun.

Padikkathavan is worth a watch for its unadulterated masala.

Sibi on "Aayirathil Oruvan"

Top 8 expected albums
Banner: Kokers Films
Cast: Kalabhavan Mani, KPAC Lalitha, Salim Kumar, Janardhanan, Senthil
Direction: Sibi Malayil
Production: Siyad Kokker
Music: Mohan Sithara

Aayirathil Oruvan' is an old fashioned story of poetic justice, but with a heart of emotions very much in the right place.

The movie coming up from the veteran Sibi Malayil, once again proves the importance of a quality thread to weave a movie of relevance. It is not at all surprising that the movie's screenplay by T. A Razaaq was adjudged the best by the state government years ago.

The age old story of a brother bearing all the brunt in his way off to pay back his debts that he had made for his family looks customary at times but escapes the regular cacophony of over melodrama and grows in us as it progresses.

The movie has Kalabhavan Mani as a Aravindan, a ration shop dealer who is finding it hard to marry of his younger sister.

And in order to find ways for dowry for his sister, his himself get married and arranges to exchange his dowry amount for his sister. But all plans goes awry and he himself gets enmeshed in debts in no time. Aravindan is now forced to take money from a local financier, who is ready to go to any extent to get back his defaults. What follows is the dilemma of the hapless man to somehow avoid the trap of the ruthless money lender who is following him relentlessly.

The story offers little freshness, but it is the realistic dialogues and performances that hold the viewer. Kalabhavan Mani is lean and looks better in the role, though he tries a little harder with his emotional dialogues. Sujitha is a perfect cast as the wife to Aravindan, but also has a spoilt scene when Aravindan returns from his hide away.

KPAC Lalitha as Aravindan's mother makes a cakewalk through a role that she had done many times before. Thilakan, Sudheesh and Oduvil also have some notable roles in the movie.

‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ has interesting visual support by cinematographer Venugopalan. The songs by Mohan Sithaara are very average. But Sibi Malayil has taken deft steps to avoid unnecessary background scores in much of the scenes.

SJ Surya on "Newtom 3am Vithi"

Every action has equivalent opposite reaction is Newton's Law. Seemingly inspired by his 'finding' S J Suryah and his director Thai Muthuselvan have dished out a racy and riveting fare that lives up to the title.

A thrilling movie, it has enough elements in it to make one glued to their seat. A S J Suryah's movie is incomplete without right commercial elements. Keeping that in mind, Thai Muthuselvan has laced the thriller with naach - gaana and typical S J Suryah humour elements in the story.

A revenge story that begins and end in just a couple of hours in a man's life is something new. Treading a different path, the director come out clean convincing the audience. Though the story is old, the trick lies in its presentation.

Guru (Suryah), a fashion designer falls in love with Priya (Sayali Bhagat), an anchor with a music channel. On the eve of their wedding, Priya's boss and the television channel owner JP (Rajeev Krishna), who lusts after her, brutally rapes and kills her an d makes it look like a suicide.

Guru vows to bump off JP on the first death anniversary of Priya. He does enough homework to nail JP. With the help of his friend working in the channel, he meticulously plans for a year and execute things in just two hours- proving Newton's third law every action has an equal but opposite reaction.

S J Suryah has improved leaps and bounds as far as acting is concerned. He has worked hard to shed his playboy image to do an angry Youngman’s role. Shayali Bhagat fills the oomph factor. But the real scene stealer is Rajeev Krishna. He had impressed everyone playing a bubbly young man in Aaha almost a decade ago. He is back after a hiatus to spell surprise on everyone playing a rich and sophisticated baddie who goes hammer and tongs to save his life.

On the flip side, the songs are a big brake to the fast screenplay. Had the second half had more of the cat and mouse game between Suryah and Rajeev, Newtonin Moonram Vidhi would have been more racy.

A new Actor on Varnam Filim

Privilege and prejudice have a price. Varnam is the story of seventeen year old Mani learning that the hard way. Unable to put up with Mani’s troublesome antics, his mother sends him to his distant uncle Durai’s home for his +2 studies. Mani, who had lost his father in a tragic caste related incident in their village ten years ago, wishes to seek revenge for his father’s death. But,he doesn’t know Velu, a lower caste person, who was responsible for his father’s death. Mani understands that memory is necessary for revenge and he keeps his desire for revenge alive by repeatedly sketching his father’s image.

Mani’s uncle Durai and his partner Rathnam own a mid size coffee estate. They use their position and money to exploit the helpless lower caste farmers. Durai takes Mani under his wings and Mani enjoys every bit of his uncle’s authority. Durai also wants to marry Rathnam’s sister Kavitha who happens to be Mani’s teacher at school.
Kavitha becomes very upset with Mani’s prejudiced behavior when he humiliates a lower caste teacher in the class. To Mani’s chagrin, Kavitha asks Mani to learn from Thangam, a fellow student who is also a lower caste girl. As Kavitha learns more about Mani and his sketching, she is supportive of his talent and this helps Mani to see Kavitha in a totally new light.

This is the setup in which Mani’s journey into adulthood starts where he is deeply influenced both by his uncle Durai and his teacher Kavitha. His inner turmoil to reconcile with his prejudices, his desire to seek revenge, his liking for Thangam and certain irrevocable and violent consequences of his seemingly casual acts form the rest of the story of this powerful action drama.

Ultimate Ajith on ASAL

Director Saran spills the beans about his current project with Ultimate Star, Ajith. The film, produced by Sivaji Films, is slated to begin shoot from May 4.

"The story of ‘Asal’ has been a germ of an idea in me for over a few years now. When I told it to Ajith, he said he really liked it. And we hadn't decided on a title then. And Ajith immediately asked me, what is the word for The Original in Tamil? I said ‘Asal’, and immediately knew I got my movie's title," chuckles the director, who is yet to finalise two heroines for the film.

Speaking about the film's storyline, he says it is tad complicated. "One of the strong themes that the film rests on is going against anybody who cheats someone who believes them. In this film, Ajith will openly vent his anger out on such people. But the film is not just another revenge tale," he adds.

Plans are on to shoot the film in Tokyo and Turkey, and Saran admits that Ajith is special to him. "I've worked with many heroes, but I must admit that Ajith is special to me. He was completely sick, immobile, and admitted in a hospital a few years ago, and I went to meet him. I was shocked to see he could not even move his head, while the rest of his body remained numb to him. He saw me and said, 'Keep an action story ready for me. I'll be back in two months.' You won't believe that he was back in two months, and the film we did was 'Amarkalam'. Ajith is truly special and Asal."
